A Christmas story for Wesley

Here is how a story called "Wesley and the Drifting Mitten" might begin:

Wesley’s houseboat bobbed gently on the winter river, its windows steamed with the warmth from the woodstove. Outside, the world was a hushed symphony of creaking ice and soft-falling snow. He was polishing his favorite brass spyglass, preparing to scan the quiet, frozen banks one last time before bed. As he wiped the lens, he noticed something peculiar drifting slowly past his window, caught in a tiny eddy. It was a single, brightly colored wool mitten, far too large for any local child, and inside its thumb, a tiny, glowing compass spun wildly.

What happens next? Wesley discovers the extraordinary mitten and its magical compass are essential for guiding someone lost on Christmas Eve.
