A Christmas story for William

Here is how a story called "William and the Mountain's Secret" might begin:

Snowflakes drifted like tiny, silent dancers around William’s mountain village, coating every roof and pine branch in a pristine, white blanket. The smell of woodsmoke and crisp air filled the evening. He was helping his grandmother hang a garland when he noticed something odd in the fresh snow outside their window. Not footprints, but a series of deep, narrow grooves, leading not into the village, but directly towards the steepest, most un-climbable peak. And at the end of the trail, half-buried, a single, glowing red ribbon.

What happens next? William discovers a mysterious trail and a peculiar object that hints at a Christmas conundrum.
