A Christmas story for Thiago

Here is how a story called "Thiago and the Whispering Parchment" might begin:

The desert night was surprisingly cold, but Thiago’s small town shimmered with the warm glow of paper lanterns, strung between adobe houses. The air smelled of dust and burning mesquite. Thiago, curled up with a book by the glow of his own flickering lantern, loved the quiet stories the desert seemed to tell. Just as he was about to drift off, a soft tap, tap, tap sounded at his window. He looked up, expecting a stray tumbleweed, but instead, a small, shimmering, almost translucent piece of parchment was pressed against the glass, held there by the wind. It was covered in strange, swirling symbols.

What happens next? Thiago deciphers the mysterious parchment, realizing it holds a crucial message for someone far away.
