A Christmas story for Eliana

Here is how a story called "Eliana and the Rooftop Rumble" might begin:

Deep in her cabin in the pines, Eliana was sipping warm cider by the crackling fire. Outside, the snow was falling in big, silent flakes. A sudden, soft thump against the windowpane made her jump. It wasn't a branch or a bird. When she peered out, there was nothing. But then, a faint, rhythmic scratching began on the roof, directly above her head, followed by a quiet, frustrated groan. It sounded as if something very large and very heavy was attempting to slide down the roof, but was stubbornly stuck.

What happens next? Eliana will investigate the strange rooftop sounds and discover a very big traveler in a very big predicament.
