A Christmas story for Eli

Here is how a story called "Eli and the Guiding Feather" might begin:

The mountain village slept under a thick blanket of snow, its windows twinkling like fallen stars. Eli, snuggled in his bed, listened to the comforting silence of the night, broken only by the distant howl of a lone wolf. He was just drifting off when a soft, persistent scratching began at his door. Not a normal scratching, this was rhythmic, almost like a code. He cautiously opened the door to find not an animal, but a single, brightly colored feather, pulsating with a faint, warm light, caught on the latch. As he picked it up, it gently vibrated, pointing towards the highest, snow-capped peak.

What happens next? Eli discovers the glowing feather is a magical compass, pointing him towards a Christmas Eve emergency on the mountaintop.
