A Christmas story for Robert

Here is how a story called "Robert and the River Chest" might begin:

The houseboat gently rocked on the winter river, its windows aglow with the warm light of Christmas decorations. Robert, cozy in his bunk, watched the snowflakes dance outside, reflecting the distant city lights. A sudden, insistent *thump-thump-thump* against the hull startled him. It wasn't the usual ice shifting, but a rhythmic, almost deliberate knocking. Cautiously, he peered out the porthole and gasped. Floating beside the boat, caught on a snag of ice, was a sturdy wooden chest, barnacled and ancient-looking, but with a brand-new, bright red bow tied around its lid. And it was clearly not empty.

What happens next? Robert soon learns the true treasure within the chest holds a special, vital message for Christmas Eve.
