A Christmas story for Nova

Here is how a story called "Nova and the Bakery Crystal" might begin:

The busy bakery was a whirlwind of flour, sugar, and Christmas carols. Nova, helping her aunt decorate cookies, noticed a peculiar draft swirling around her feet, carrying with it a scent not of cinnamon or vanilla, but of distant arctic winds and something faintly metallic. A moment later, a single, perfectly formed ice crystal, impossibly large and shimmering with inner light, landed on the warm, gingerbread dough she was about to roll. It didn’t melt, but pulsed faintly, as if with a tiny heartbeat.

What happens next? Nova will follow the strange ice crystal's subtle pull and discover a very chilly visitor in need of help.
