A Christmas story for Jonathan

Here is how a story called "Jonathan and the Melting Star-Drop" might begin:

Jonathan’s big family house was a joyful symphony of Christmas Eve sounds: carols on the stereo, excited whispers from younger cousins, and the clatter of pots in the kitchen. Jonathan, trying to find a quiet corner to read his new book, finally settled under the towering, glittering Christmas tree. He was just turning the first page when a soft, almost imperceptible 'whoosh' came from the very top of the tree, followed by a gentle 'plink'. Looking up, he saw the star on top was tilted, and a small, shimmering, almost translucent icicle, no bigger than his pinky finger, lay on the carpet, slowly melting into a pool of iridescent light.

What happens next? Jonathan discovers the melting icicle holds a magical secret vital to ensuring Christmas Eve's magic doesn't melt away.
