A Christmas story for Alice

Here is how a story called "Alice and the Gingerbread Message" might begin:

The bakery hummed with a final, sleepy warmth, the air still thick with the sweet aroma of cinnamon and sugar plums. Alice, helping her grandmother tidy up, loved Christmas Eve in the bakery; it felt like a giant, delicious hug. As she swept the last crumbs, she noticed a single, pristine gingerbread man lying discarded near the back door, not broken, but with a tiny, parchment scroll clutched in its icing hand. It was far too elegant for one of their usual decorations.

What happens next? Alice, intrigued by the mysterious gingerbread man, discovered a tiny, urgent plea written on the scroll he held.
