A Christmas story for Adrian

Here is how a story called "Adrian and the Whistling Ribbon" might begin:

The scent of pine needles filled Adrian’s cabin, mingling with the sweet aroma of drying cedar. Outside, the world was a hushed canvas of white, the tall pines standing like sentinels guarding the silent forest. Adrian was putting the finishing touches on a tiny, hand-carved wooden reindeer he’d made for his little sister when a peculiar whistling sound, sharp and insistent, cut through the quiet. It wasn't the wind, nor an animal. It sounded like air escaping from something, rapidly. Following the sound to the snow-covered porch, he found a long, twisted golden ribbon snaking into the darkness, its end tied to a small, glistening, but deflated balloon.

What happens next? Adrian's find of the peculiar deflated balloon reveals a larger problem with a vital Christmas delivery.
