A Christmas story for Maria

Here is how a story called "Maria's Tiny Tree Secret" might begin:

In Maria’s small city apartment, the tiny tabletop tree twinkled bravely, its few ornaments reflecting the glow of the streetlights outside. The air hummed with the distant drone of traffic, a lullaby Maria was used to. She was tucked under her coziest blanket, admiring a hand-drawn picture of a grand sleigh, when a faint, insistent scratching began at her window. It wasn’t a branch; they were too high up. It sounded more like a small, frantic tap, tap, tapping. Curiosity piqued, Maria carefully pulled back the curtain, and gasped. Perched precariously on her windowsill was a crumpled, snow-dusted scroll, tied with a bright red ribbon.

What happens next? Maria discovers a mysterious scroll on her windowsill, and its urgent message propels her into a surprising Christmas Eve adventure.
